In my previous two articles, we discussed the foundational principles of crafting AI prompts. The first article, Understanding AI Prompts and Why Things Go Wrong, explored why prompts often yield unexpected results and emphasized the importance of clarity in guiding AI. Working with AI is more than simply issuing commands. It is a collaborative process that requires creativity, patience, and refinement. AI is not a perfect artist. It relies on our guidance to achieve the desired results. The interaction between us and AI is an iterative process of feedback. Each pair of prompts and responses reveals something new, allowing us to refine our vision and guide the AI more effectively.

For example, a request for a “cute cartoon shark” resulted in a drawing with unintended elements like pencils and erasers. It is frustrating at first, but this “mistake” highlighted the importance of clarity in prompt writing. Through iterative refinement, our prompts evolved into a clear and precise request, which led to the desired final image.

Lessons Learned

1. Embrace Challenges: Unexpected results are the opposite of failures. They are opportunities to improve. For instance, the challenges with the cute shark prompt emphasized the need to refine language and exclude unwanted elements.
2. Precision is Power: Clear and specific instructions yield better results. Successful prompts, like the angry shark and killer whale, demonstrate how tone, style, and even dimensions can be tailored to align with creative intent.
3. Adaptability is Key: Transitioning from one type of object to another requires flexibility in prompt writing. Each subject brought unique challenges and nuances which proves the importance of adapting strategies to fit our context.

Reflecting on Prompts

The examples explored in the previous two articles demonstrate the evolution of prompt crafting:

• Cartoon Backpack: Illustrated how clarity and simplicity bring whimsical ideas to life.

I attempted another drawing: Man under Sun. As you can see from the collage at the beginning of this article, even something seemingly simple, such as drawing a man under the sun, requires plenty of attempts. Without giving too many details, it should be clear that an iterative approach is central to producing the desired result with AI.
